JOSÉ YAQUE
“The origin, the essence of things and phenomenon have always aroused my curiosity.” José Yaque
José Yaque was born in 1985 in Manzanillo, Cuba - a creative wellspring which in recent years has produced a plethora of talented young Cuban artists. Yaque graduated from the Cuban Superior Institute of Art in 2011, and lives and works in Havana.
David Gill first met Yaque at his Havana studio in 2015. He invited him to complete a residency in London in October 2016. This was followed by Yaque’s first solo exhibition in London: ‘Tierra Madre’ at David Gill Gallery in March 2017. The same year, he was included in the Cuban Pavillion at the 57th Venice Biennale. ‘Kind of Blue’ marked his second solo exhibition at David Gill Gallery in 2018.
Yaque interprets colour as the beginning of the search for this essence in ourselves, exploring pigment, shade, depth and movement in his canvases to dramatic effect.
Yaque has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions worldwide. He has held the Rockefeller Foundation residence in New York, and was part of the Cuban Pavillion at the 57th Venice Biennale. In 2018 he was part of Art Unlimited, Basel, represented by Galleria Continua.
